Last week on 22-23 October, New Zealand’s exchange, the NZX hosted the sixth annual Global Dairy Seminar at the St Regis Hotel in Singapore.

The seminar has now become the dairy industry’s Asia-Pacific risk management conference of the year where participants in the industry converge to expand their knowledge of risk management strategies, hear the latest insights about prevalent topics driving dairy prices globally and network with global peers.

This year, the event attracted over 170 senior executives including directors, presidents, department heads, sales and commercial managers as well as senior traders and analysts from across the industry. Attendance was driven from across the globe, with delegates ranging from Asia, Oceania, Europe, The Middle East, North and South America.

The theme of the seminar was ‘A Sustainable Outlook’ which sought to examine the economic and environmental factors influencing the evolution of the dairy market in New Zealand and other key dairy producing and trading regions.

It was host to an impressive line-up of speakers and panelists who were ably supported by former All Black, Andrew Mehrtens who returned as MC for 2019.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Torsten Hemme, Founder and Managing Director of IFCN – The Dairy Research Network and Bruce Turner, Central Portfolio Management Director at Fonterra’s NZMP.

Dr. Hemme presented a long-term dairy demand and supply outlook out to 2040, examining past economic indicators such as oil and feed as well as future drivers including the political environment and changing consumer preferences. Bruce Turner provided a strategic update on Fonterra’s business and market outlook from Fonterra’s perspective.

Gold sponsors Jarden and INTL FCStone presented two education sessions covering the use of risk management tools for New Zealand farmers and an introduction to basis risk and carry trading to kick off the first day. This was followed by a networking drinks function sponsored by Macquarie Bank to conclude the day.

Other speakers included Miranda Ling from Olam China, Michael Harvey of Rabobank, Mondelez International’s Zoltan Klagyivik, MG Ram and Anup Singh from Gama Corp and Solera Advisors as well as NZX’s Julia Jones.

Two panel discussions covering the evolving markets of Asia and the Middle East and the Americas (North & South) also featured on the second day. These discussions provided key insights into the developing consumer landscape, an outlook on the market in terms of supply, demand, and pricing expectations based on current and future drivers for these regions.
