Starting a business in Singapore

Company Incorporation/Business Registration

All businesses in Singapore must be registered with the Registry of Companies and Businesses (RCB). The types of organisations that could be registered are sole proprietorships, partnerships, incorporated companies and foreign companies.

There are no restrictions on the types of businesses that may be set up in Singapore. Some businesses however, do require special licenses such as stock broking firms, insurance companies, banks and finance companies, employment agencies (including executive recruitment), etc.

Businesses could be incorporated online at the Registry of Companies & Businesses website: http://www.acra.gov.sg/company/business.html. Or they can be incorporated by any law firm, corporate secretary or business advisory firm in Singapore.

Additionally, companies can seek the assistance of DP Bureau (www.dpbureau.com.sg) – a one-stop service bureau appointed by ACRA. Staff at DP will assist firms with their business registration and advice on legal requirements. Companies can access DP’s network of service providers such as lawyers, accountants, human resources (employment passes), etc.

To set up a foreign representative office, the government agency to approach is the International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore). More information is available at http://www.iesingapore.com

Other Government Assistance

The government's push to e-enable its services have created a more transparent and easily accessible site for the public to access over 300 of its services that are currently online.

http://www.business.gov.sg is a comprehensive site listing information about government tenders, application for licenses, business incentive schemes and other assistance such as market research, legal services, financing, etc.
