Above Mueller Glacier, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park About the chamber
Mount Cook National Park is a top spot for spectacular alpine scenery. All but one of its 29 peaks is over 3000m, so the park has become New Zealand's mountain climbing mecca. Non-climbers can enjoy a selection of challenging alpine walks – from the one hour Red Tarns stair-climb to the relatively flat hike to Kea Point.

Hongi Become a partner The hongi is a traditional Maori greeting. Noses are pressed together and the ha, or breath of life, is exchanged and intermingled. The tradition of sharing the breath of life is considered to have come directly from the gods. The hongi is an integral part of the powhiri (welcoming ceremony). |

Art appreciation Kiwi Youth The Maori people have developed a distinctive and magnificent visual arts tradition. It was shaped by the country’s geographic isolation, an abundance of superb carving timber and the discovery of pounamu (greenstone, nephrite). In schools throughout New Zealand, students are encouraged to gain an understanding and appreciation of the special nature of Maori art. |

The poi dance Events Originally a form of weapon training, the poi dance has evolved to become a fascinating display of skill and timing. Usually performed by women and accompanied by singing or chanting, the dance involves the twirling of balls on either short or long strings. Percussive sound is produced by striking the ball on the body or other hand, immediately reversing its rotation. |

The Swoop Photo gallery
Located at the Agrodome in Rotorua, The Swoop has the ability to terrify up to three riders at a time. Swoopers begin their hair-raising experience by slipping into a hang-gliding harness and being hoisted 40 metres into the air. When the release cord is pulled, the riders are propelled forward at 130kph. Ye haa!

Artwork with traditional Maori influences
Contact us
Art exhibitions are often held to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year, a time of knowledge sharing, story telling and cultural appreciation. Artists often combine traditional motifs with contemporary techniques to produce outstanding works like these. Matariki begins in June when a group of stars, the Pleiades, first appears on the eastern horizon. |
